Hi, I’m James Nowell.
I’ve been working in distributed systems and big data for more than a decade. My goal is to help analysts, engineers, managers, executives improve their software development skills.
I love helping people grow and develop, both in their careers and in their lives. I began mentoring interns early in my career, and soon began to lead more junior developers as well. I’ve helped managers understand their teams better, and helped teams understand more about what their manager needs from them. I’ve helped executives better understand complex technical initiatives from their cost, to scope, staffing, and direction.
Large format presentations on complex systems or problems are one of my favorite challenges; past talk topics have included Apache Spark, Spark Streaming, expert systems, a series on event driven systems including Kafka, a series on data mesh architectures, domain driven design, and change data capture. I enjoy targeting the information for each audience, making sure to capture details of value for everyone.
I enjoy helping dreamers reach their goals and helping them build actionable plans to achieve them, whether technical or personal. If you’re trying to learn a new software language, framework, design pattern, or tool, I’d love to help you achieve your goal. If you’re trying to build a project or product, I’d love to help you keep moving in the right direction.
Technology careers frequently have side effects outside of work. Work life balance can be difficult to maintain, and managing stress is a real issue. I also like to help people focus on creating environments that help them work in healthy ways to avoid unnecessary stress and burnout.
My setup…
Enough people have asked about my audio and video setup I thought I would make a place to link them to.
Video
I don’t actually have a webcam, I use my Fujifilm X-T2 (superceded by the newer X-T5).
Capture
To get the video from the camera to the computer, I used the HDMI out for monitoring the video, and use a USB capture card to turn the HDMI into a webcam.
Audio Interface
Capturing audio can get tricky if you think you may want to use an instrument, or multiple microphones. An external audio interface handles the mics and the analog to digital.
Microphone
Need to pic up the audio somehow. Good enough to use for more than just zoom.
Headphones
I like over the ear headphones because they block a lot of sound while being comfortable for a long time. With the audio interface, I can monitor my audio live in the headphones.
Audio Monitors
Always good to be able to play back audio. Studio monitors reproduce sounds well, and it’s good to check what your audio will sound like outside of the headphones.
Mic Stand
I previously had a cheaper mic stand, which was too small, and broke almost immediately. I put up with it for years, until getting a solid, larger stand, which helps it move further out of the way.
Tripod
Newest addition. Overkill for most people, but I’d like to take some video while travelling.
